REDISCOVER LIFE.
// The Node Initiative
MISSION STATEMENT
The Node NFP works to build more livable communities by dismantling the economic, social, racial, environmental, and structural barriers embedded in our neighborhoods — from exclusionary zoning and inequitable transit access to the physical design choices that divide communities. We advance community‑driven solutions that restore connection, mobility, and opportunity for all.
WHO
The Community
A collective of neighbors, designers, and strategists working on the ground to prioritize people and address barriers and build solutions to make our communities more liveable for all.
WHAT
Livable Infrastructure
We break down systemic barriers by creating neighborhoods that are walkable, connected, and equitable. This means designing spaces where people can move freely, access opportunities, and feel a genuine sense of belonging. Our focus is on building infrastructure that supports community life rather than divides it.
WHEN
Immediate Deployment
We are on the ground now — building networks with partner organizations, delivering direct support through donations of essential goods, and connecting community members to critical resources. At the same time, we are lobbying legislatures to change laws that perpetuate inequity, including zoning restrictions and transit infrastructure policies. Our work begins with immediate relief and extends to systemic reform, ensuring both short‑term support and long‑term transformation.
WHERE
Our Neighborhoods
It starts with our site walks — a ground‑up approach that begins at the sidewalk. We focus on urban deserts and disconnected zones within the local grid, identifying where communities are cut off and working to reconnect them. By starting small and local, we build pathways that restore access, mobility, and opportunity block by block.
WHY
Human Necessity
We work to replace structural isolation with real connection and restore the human scale to our streets. This benefits everyone: better access to opportunities and support allows communities to thrive. Thoughtful planning — such as creating dense, walkable neighborhoods — improves overall well‑being, reduces costs, and ensures that resources are shared more equitably. When communities are connected, people live healthier, more affordable, and more fulfilling lives.
HOW
Community Driven
Our work begins on the ground. We work directly with community members and partner organizations to identify immediate needs and co‑create solutions. The Intake Portal connects our most vulnerable neighbors to vital resources, while our partnerships deliver goods and support where they are needed most. At the same time, we lobby government for systemic change in zoning and transit infrastructure. We integrate technology, including data analytics, to guide planning and ensure that solutions are effective, equitable, and sustainable.
